THE BAPTISM OF INFANTS:
It is recommended that the Baptism of an Infant be celebrated on Sunday, the Day of the Lord's Resurrection. (Canon 851) Baptisms are usually held in our Church (Canon 857), either during a scheduled Sunday Mass or immediately following the Mass.  This is the parent’s option. Parents are reminded that they should choose a name for their child that is either a suitable Biblical Name or a Christian name (Saint's Name).  "Care should be taken that a name foreign to Christian sensibility should not be given." (Canon 855)  It is expected that the parents of the child participate in a Baptismal Preparation Class with the Pastor or his Delegate (Canon 851). Parents should make arrangements for this class prior to the birth of their child, by calling the Parish Office at 836-3279.  The parents may choose the Celebrant of the Baptism from our Parish Staff:  Deacon Ray, Fr. Paul, Fr. Ric or a priest/deacon relative.  "PARENTS ARE OBLIGED TO TAKE CARE THAT INFANTS ARE BAPTIZED IN THE FIRST FEW WEEKS..." (Canon 867-1).  Only one sponsor (Godparent) is required.  However, if two are chosen then they are usually one male and one female (Canon 873).  The role of a Godparent is a serious religious role.  The requirements were outlined in previous bulletins.  They may also be found in Canons 872-874 or by calling the Parish Office and a list will be sent to you to consider prior to choosing someone for this role.  Catholics, who are in an invalid marriage according to the laws of the Church as well as those not participating at mass on a weekly basis, are NOT suitable to serve as a Godparent or Sponsor.  Those chosen who not registered and participating members of our Parish must also receive a "sponsor eligibility card" from their proper pastor.  The customary offering made at the time of the Baptism to the Church is left up to the family.
